For most people considering laser tattoo removal, this is the first question that comes to mind: will it actually disappear completely, or will there always be a shadow left behind? The honest answer is — it depends, but with the right technology and enough sessions, complete removal is possible for the vast majority of tattoos.
What determines whether a tattoo can be fully removed
A few factors decide how completely a tattoo will fade:
Ink color. Black and dark blue ink respond fastest to laser treatment because they absorb the laser wavelength most efficiently. Greens, yellows, and light colors are more stubborn and may need a specialized laser like PicoWay to break down fully.
Ink depth and density. Tattoos applied by an experienced artist tend to have more consistent, predictable ink placement, which actually makes them easier to treat than amateur or “stick and poke” tattoos, where ink depth varies unpredictably.
Skin tone and location on the body. Areas with better blood circulation (like the chest or back) tend to clear faster than areas like hands, feet, or ankles.
How old the tattoo is. Older tattoos have often already faded somewhat from sun exposure and natural ink breakdown, which can mean fewer sessions are needed.
Why PicoWay changes the equation
Older laser technology struggled with certain colors and often left faint traces even after many sessions. PicoWay uses ultra-short pulses that shatter ink into much smaller particles, which the body can clear away more completely, including colors that used to be considered “unremovable,” like greens and blues. That’s the technology we use at Ink Rewind for every session, and it’s the main reason full removal is achievable for the large majority of clients we treat in our Coral Gables studio.
How many sessions does it actually take?
There’s no single answer that applies to everyone, but as a general guide:
- Small, black-ink tattoos: often 4-6 sessions
- Larger or multi-color tattoos: typically 6-10+ sessions
- Sessions are usually spaced 6-8 weeks apart to give the body time to clear the broken-down ink
During your free consultation, we look at your specific tattoo, its size, color, age, and location, and give you a realistic session estimate instead of a generic promise.
What “full removal” really looks like
For the majority of clients, complete removal means the tattoo is no longer visible to the naked eye in normal lighting. In some cases, particularly with certain colors or tattoos that were done very deep in the skin, a very faint shadow can remain even after extensive treatment. We’re upfront about this during your consultation rather than after your first session.
